I'm thinking of those already hit by Gustav, and those in its path, and to those who continue to be affected by Katrina.

It's a goddamned travesty and utter failure and I hope nobody ever has to go through it again. Stay as safe as you can, y'all.

I've noticed a few commenters (all safely far away from this shit) expressing enthusiasm about the projected landfall coinciding with the opening day of the Republican convention.

Putting aside for a moment the fact that few of us here are enthused about the idea of 'taking one for the team,' the fact is that the republicans would simply spin this as a prime example of 'a democrat governor' and 'a democrat mayor' wasting 'all that money' they've sent down here. Never mind that most of it still sits in a bank account somewhere collecting interest for the feds, a victim of the red tape president Fuckhead promised to cut.

And FEMA, showing it's usual impeccable sense of timing, just last week quietly, arbitrarily, and without fanfare installed a new wrinkle in it's payout system for disaster relief, one that devolves the responsibility for flood insurance deductables on public buildings (schools, hospitals, police stations etc.) back onto state and municiple governments.

The idea is to encourage 'good choices' in purchasing these policies, but since Katrina most of south Louisiana can't find insurers who'll write anything but policies with insanely high deductables. So, basically, if we get any significant wind or flood damage, most of the recently rebuilt fire and police stations (approximately half of New Orleans firefighters and cops are still working out of trailers) won't be rebuilt. Municipalities, many of which are already broke, simply won't have the bucks.

Darlene and I will be staying regardless, since our mechanic informs us our 17 year old car won't survive another 22-hours-of-stop-and-go-driving evac. I do hope we don't lose power too early on monday though. I really want to see the contrast between the heroes welcome Clinton got at the dem convention and the response (if any) to Bush dragging his smelly, rotting political corpse into the convention hall in St. Paul.

Will the band still play "Hail to the Chief"? My choice would be Oscar Brown Jr's "Somebody Buy Me A Drink."

BTW, the rugged, bootstrapping individualists in Florida solve this insurance conundrum by having the state pay for it. If you want to insure your million dollar beachfront condo off hurricane alley in republican-controlled Florida, your only recourse is state-sponsored, taxpayer subsidized insurance.
