Writer's Block: One Hit Wonder Day

Today's National One Hit Wonder Day. Whole albums or entire ouvres can be quite impressive, but more often than not, individual songs have the largest impact on us. Which one hit wonders have played a major role in your life?

Don't you mean "President" Palin? :-P

BTW, have you read the piece on her in the new issue of the New Yorker? I thought it was a nice sketch on Alaskan politics but of course I know diddly about Alaskan politics and I'd like your take on it.

For instance, Ben Stevens had received seven hundred and fifteen thousand dollars over three years from the Special Olympics, as the chief executive of the 2001 Winter Games in Anchorage, for which his father had brought millions of dollars in federal aid.

We covered this heavily at KFQD. We were a sponsor, so Ben was in all hte time. I bowed out as much as I could - I thought the Special Olympics were incredibly exploitative.

Back to reading.

I thought the article did a nice job of showing the rhetorical juggling act Alaskans have to perform to reconcile their rugged, individualistic self-image with the fact that much of the state would wither and die without lots of fat federal subsidies.

I'm not talking about people who actually do live out in the boonies with a chainsaw and a shortwave radio, or bush pilots and oil riggers. Rather I'm referrencing urban SUV drivers who nevertheless assume the trappings of rural libertarians, with lots of huntin, fishin, wolf-shootin-from-helicopterin, and general all round guy-you'd-like-to-have-a-beer-with stuff.

I've always imagined them to be sort of like Texans that way; people who bloviate a lot about what self-sufficient bootstrappers they are, but who know in their heart that they'd be sucking their water out of a cactus without massive federal irrigation projects, and poor as church mice if not for the happy geographical accident of their state's being located on top of a big honkin pool of oil.

Did you see the flowsheet I stole and put up!!?

And I only had to say it because I didn't see anybody else taking the obvious bait. I couldn't resist. I had to, it was my civic duty!
