Burda mens sizing question and a chair refashion (possibly tutorial?)
Started out to make this for my husband (BWOF 08/09 133): Got frustrated when the muslin was ridiculously huge even though I used the corresponding chest size in the chart. I had some busy sewing energy so I recovered my husband's home office chair from a thrifted curtain instead. I used a zipper down the back to get a tight fit for a clean, upholstered look. I was really pleased with the result. More pics on my livejournal including chair before and after. I'm thinking of doing a tutorial since I have one more chair to make a pattern for (my chair). Anyone interested? I will take pictures and try to document how I do it. Also... Has anyone made that Burda men's jacket? The sizing for men in their magazine seems totally whack. I'm wondering if I have a typo or something, it's that bad. Would love to hear any feedback on Burda sizing for men. |

Daaaah... Bears da Bears da Bears da Bears da Bears da Bears
You know, the MLB playoffs finally wrapped up, and I thought I was going to be able to get back on a normal sleep schedule, then the NFL decided to schedule the Eagles-Cowboys game for Sunday night. I haven't been watching as much NFL football this year - especially the Sunday night games - and was unaware they all started at roughly 1:17 a.m. Monday morning, Eastern time. So much for getting back on the right foot Monday morning. In other news, I'm old and boring now. |

Long time lurker, first time poster...
Hi there! So, I was sewing a set of tab-top curtains this weekend for my bedroom. I've lined the curtains with a fleece-let fabric (It's an energy conservation thing. I hope.), which is making the whole structure pretty... thick. According to the very basic pattern I'm following, my next (and final) step is to attach the tab tops to the curtain by sandwiching the top of the curtain and top stitching each tab into place. Now, my dilemma. When I went to sew the first tab on things were fine. Then, suddenly, during the second tab, my machine gave a loud "bang!" and the needle snapped in two. I removed the curtain, replaced the needle and checked to see if my machine would sew okay. It won't. Unfortunately, this is my first machine and I'm very much a beginner seamstress. I don't know what is wrong, exactly. When I sew a straight line everything works just fine. The reverse stitch is where I seem to have an issue: the fabric bunches instead of being pulled back, so the stitching goes to one side. The piece that my bobbin sits in appears to be loose, I can hear it clattering around and it's easy to move. Does that mean something I can't see is broken, maybe something that holds the bobbin part in place? Anyone know of a way I can fix this all by my lonesome? Or should I just schedule an appointment with a trained professional now? Current Mood: anxious |

Great Representitive for His Breed
My neighbour is really terrified of dogs (all dogs, even doglets). She was mauled by a chow when she was 2 and needed over a hundred stitches, so no surprise there. Today, I was really impressed with her. Francis always barks at her when she comes home, because he barks at everyone he's never been formally introduced to. So today he was barking at her, and I apologised to her and explained that he just keeps barking at her every time he sees her because he never met her so she's not his friend yet. She mustered up all her courage and said that she'd meet him, because she doesn't want to be afraid of him for the whole time we live next door to each other. I brought him over and made him sit, which made him bark even more because he mainly just wanted to jump all over her. She asked what she was supposed to do, so I explained how to come up to him and let him smell her hand (as far as I know, she's never pet a dog before, which is impressive given she's in her 50s), and she did. He licked her a bunch and I think he might've put her hand in his mouth, but of course he didn't bite her (he just likes to taste everyone and everything). Then she pet him a little bit and he got really excited and tried to jump on her, which I had to keep him from doing. I totally forgot I'd just put his flea treatment on him, so I didn't tell her not to pet his back, which she ended up doing. I remembered at some point so I told her to wash her hands when she went in, before making dinner or whatever. I think she pet him for possibly as long as 2 minutes, though she said it would be more pleasant if his mouth wasn't open the whole time (I had to explain he was just smiling at her). Eventually we just ignored him and talked to each other, and he laid down and rolled around on her foot. Lol. He is not the smartest guy, but he's sweet. Then she said it was too bad she didn't have a camera, because no one she knew was going to believe she pet a dog, let alone a 65 pound pit bull. He was a great representative for his breed today and she said she might pet him again some day, but not all the time. :) I was proud of them both. |
